People often have common questions for me when we first speak. You’ll find answers to these questions below.
What do you do as a writing coach?
As a writing coach, I function as your partner in the writing process. And what this means is based on what you need as an individual. In some sessions, I might talk with you about the ideas you want to convey and how to best structure them in your document. Or rather than speaking with you, I might provide written comments on a draft. I will point out questions that a reader might have, and I will comment on the development of and logical connections between your ideas. In another session, we might address issues of writer’s block or other issues of writerly distress. In all of our sessions, I will listen to you to understand what you want to accomplish, what strategies have been working for you, and I will help you find the strategies that work for you to make your writing more clear and effective and your writing process more efficient.
What are the tools that you use to work with people?
If you live in Victoria or happen to be in town for a few days, we’ll find a place that is mutually convenient to meet.
If you live outside Victoria, we’ll use Google Meet, Zoom, Teams, or phone to do our work. Since I have been teaching writing online for many years, I am used to working with people remotely and have found that there are a number of good ways to create a solid working relationship without being co-located.
What kind of editing do you offer?
I consider myself a structural editor. I can offer feedback on the organization of your document and how you might restructure the information so that you are more clearly conveying your message. If I have been working with you from the beginning of a project, I will happily proofread your work.
If you are looking for someone to simply copyedit or proofread a document, I would be happy to pass along the names of some of my colleagues to you.
Do you write for people?
Following ethical requirements for academic editors, I do not write papers for people nor will I make changes directly in a document. That said, I will provide written comments on drafts for my clients, highlighting difficulties and making suggestions for how these difficulties might be resolved.
Outside of an academic setting, I will do writing for people depending on the situation and the need.
What do you charge for your services?
Currently, I charge $110 + GST an hour for my coaching services. In certain cases, where imminent deadlines require immediate turnaround times, I may need to charge a rush fee. This will always be discussed with you prior to engaging in the work.
My rates for other services vary depending on the service, timeline, and scope.
How do I pay you?
I accept payment by Interac email transfer, PayPal, cash, and cheque.
I am happy to answer other questions that pertain to your individual situation. Please contact me to set up an appointment time. I am happy to offer a 30-minute consultation at no charge.
